New technologies for winter service

In cooperation with Educenter d.o.o. we presented new technologies in the field of winter service for DARS, Fraport, General Police Directorate, Slovenian Infrastructure Agency, Slovenian Railways, Association of Municipalities and towns of Slovenia and other participants.

Winter service is the battle against snow and ice to ensure traffic and road safety.

Employees must go to work, children must go to school, transporters must deliver cargo on time so that production processes run smoothly. Impassable roads due to snow and ice can have a dramatic impact on our lives, as we depend on passable and safe roads for virtually our very lives.

The digitization of spreaders, the development of wireless data transmission and the development of road sensor technology enable the acquisition of a large amount of data.

The challenge is how to best use this data for winter services. Peter Nutz, head of the winter service in the Vienna region, which has a population of 1.91 million, and head of the winter service technical committee at PIARC, says that it is also a challenge to accurately record what data the decisions were based on. “In winter work, a decision can seem completely meaningless after a few hours or the next day. If the decision-makers have a record of the data on the basis of which we made such a decision at that moment, it often turns out that the decision was justified at that moment and, given the data we had at our disposal, we could not have made a different decision. In this way, we avoid unjustified criticism as well as compensation claims in the event of accidents.” (source: slovenceceste.si)

The Riko Ribnica programme at the Winter Service 2022 conference presented the following technologies:

iSPC “Intelligent snow plough control” is a technology for intelligent attachments control. The iSPC system is a combination of a hydraulic vehicle upgrade, an ergonomic control lever with function keys and a control panel with LCD colour display.

The iSPC system is a system with many advantages:

A new control console that allows to monitor and control what’s happening with the attachments via a camera and additional sensors.
Electronic control and combination of the connectors now allows less corrective action at the control panel and more driver attention to the driving and what is happening on the road.
The command console significantly changes the way the machine has worked so far, with a very clear graphical display of what is actually happening in the machine, making it easier to control, and making command selection and calibration much simpler. The control panel is more user-friendly.
The display is also a collection point for all information on the machine’s operation, which is stored and ready for future reference.
The great value of electronic control is also the collection of working hours, which are themselves recorded in the controller.

EpoMaster & EpoSat – “Automatic and GPS-controlled spreading system” is a professional, user-friendly, extremely precise, stable spreading system and ensures a more even treatment of icy roads.

The purpose of EpoSat is to automatically control the spreading settings based on the position of the spreader on the route via the Global Positioning System (GPS). With EpoSat, the spreader’s computer takes care of the spreading without the driver having to intervene. This means the driver can concentrate on driving the truck and monitoring traffic.

EpoWeb – online editing navigation, which can be used with an internet connection on a regular computer. The application allows to add navigation messages, modify gritting parameters and EpoSat routes in case of e.g. road works or general route changes.

Once the changes are made using the intuitive and logical application, the EpoSat routes are transferred to the individual spreaders. This can be done with a USB stick or quickly with a 4G wireless connection using the EpoData bi-directional Epoke communication tool.

EpoWeb – unlimited routes, 6 different maps

EpoData – Online Data Collection is a data collection and fleet monitoring system that can be installed and used on all types of machines (sweepers, mowers and other brands of salt spreaders).

Benefits of EpoData:

shows real-time data collection and fleet monitoring,
provides an overview of activities and analysis options,
allows two-way communication with the spreader, e.g. new routes or route corrections online,
allows route management,
standard data storage,
Allows additional users to view.

EpoSat – GPS controlled spreading

EpoTherm – an electronic system that automatically regulates the amount of gritting. EpoTherm is a temperature-controlled spreading system that automatically adjusts the amount of spreading according to weather conditions chosen by the operator and based on continuous measurements of the road surface temperature.

Mixus AST – Spreading disc with independent mixing chamber. To achieve a good result in the fight against slippery roads, the spreading material must be distributed in the most optimal way. A good spreading pattern is very important, i.e. a good lateral distribution of salt over the entire width of the road and a sharply defined spreading pattern on the outer edges.Two important factors for a good spreading pattern are:

complete and homogeneous pre-wetting of the salt,
a spreader plate that precisely distributes the desired amount of salt on the desired road surface.

During spreading, the travel speed, symmetry setting, spreading width and spreading quantity are changed. This means that the quantity and weight of material fed into the spreading disc is constantly changing. When using traditional spreading discs, the spreading pattern usually changes when the material input is increased or decreased.

Epoke’s Mixus AST spreading disc has been developed to compensate for changing material supply and thus meet the high-tech requirements for an optimal spreading pattern.

RIKO NPO 99: Innovative Solution for Road Safety Barriers

Introducing RIKO NPO 99 – a device for repairing and installing new posts and straightening road safety barriers

With the innovative RIKO NPO 99 device, we present a simple procedure for removing and replacing damaged posts. A winch is used for extraction and a hydraulic hammer for installing new posts of various dimensions.

The device operates on a single- or dual-circuit hydraulic system, compatible with different vehicles such as tractors, trucks, and Unimogs. It is easily mounted onto the vehicle using a standard mounting plate size 3 or 5. In the case of a Unimog with a rear-mounted plate and appropriate hydraulics, the NPO 99 can also be installed on the rear side of the vehicle and used for work on the left side. At Riko Ribnica, we provide the required upgrade and plate installation tailored to customer needs.

The support wheel is height-adjustable and serves as a stabilizer, ensuring steady operation even on uneven terrain. Lateral movement of up to 90 cm facilitates maneuvering and handling of the device. For safety and operator comfort, the NPO 99 is equipped with a portable control panel, allowing operation and monitoring from a safe distance.

The control panel provides various functions such as on/off, hammer start/stop, carriage position adjustment, winch control, telescope 1/2 adjustment, raising and lowering the support wheel, and hydraulic lateral tilt of the carriage.

The NPO 99 device enables the following main work functions:

Extraction and replacement of damaged barrier posts: The tool is adaptable to different shapes and dimensions of posts.
Straightening of barriers: The device enables straightening of safety barriers.
Hole preparation: A special tool with different types of tips is available for preparing holes for PVC, wooden signposts, and other purposes.

Additional equipment also includes a hydraulic hole-drilling device with drill bits of 150 or 300 mm diameter and up to 1000 mm depth. This device is also useful for preparing holes for roadside tree planting and other purposes.

The device comes in standard RAL 2011 color but can also be customized to customer preferences and requirements.

Installation procedure of a new post:

Mount the NPO 99 device onto a suitable carrier vehicle with single (tractor) or dual-circuit (Unimog) hydraulics on a three-point hitch or municipal plate.
Connect the device to the vehicle via hydraulic couplings and an electrical cable.
Move the vehicle to the post installation location and stop at the roadside.
Activate the hydraulic system.
Remove the control panel from its holder and test all operating functions from a safe distance.
Lower the support wheel so that the device is aligned and stable (achieve the most vertical position of the carriage).
Use the hydraulic cylinder to adjust the vertical position in relation to the driving direction.
Use the telescope to move the guide in the housing above the post driving point.
Insert the profile matching the post profile into the hammer housing and ensure the post sits properly in the hammer piston and stands vertically.
Activate the hammer and set the number of hammer strokes on the flow regulator.
When the desired post height is reached, stop the hammer and lift it.

As part of the sustainable strategic transformation, we signed up for comprehensive training on circular product design. This course addresses emerging circularity standards such as EN45554.

How can you tell if your product is “circular”?

Circular product design helps design professionals improve the long-term sustainability of their products. A key principle of the approach is ‘waste design’: placing a product in a circular economy where the value of its components and materials is preserved and not wasted – from minor fixes to complete redesign.

The “Value Hill” principle proposes a categorization based on the stages of a product’s life cycle before, during and after use and explains the systemic differences between a linear economy and a circular economy.

By easily disassembling the parts and materials of the product, all these processes will become more cost-effective and thus fit better into different circular strategies.

What the course covers:

“Value Hill” analysis and various circular product design strategies to capture value,
Disassembly and analysis of product components,
Locating critical product components (Hotspot Mapping),
Creation of a scheme of the product disassembly process,
Analyzing product components,
Combined list of components (Bill of material – BoM),

The training focused on the sustainable design of our products, the use of recyclable materials, and the analysis of strategies for recycling, refurbishing and extending product life.

We are increasingly involved in refurbishing our products, so to speak, refurbishing a used product to near-new condition, while replacing and recycling components that affect the safety of the product. We also take care of the recycling of those products that are worn to the point that they can no longer be restored.

A step towards making our sustainable transformation a reality with a solar power plant

At Riko Ribnica, we installed a new solar power plant on the roof of the production plant. An investment that will contribute to the long-term goal of reducing CO₂ emissions and saving energy costs.

The solar power plant consists of 357 modules based on PERC (Passivated Emitter and Rear Contact) technology, which absorb 20.5% of the incident light and convert it into electricity.

All 357 modules produce about 170,000 kWh of electricity per year, which covers about 70% of the total electricity consumption in our company. This will reduce our carbon footprint by around 80 tonnes of CO₂ each year.

The new solar power plant represents an important step in the implementation of the outlined sustainable strategy. We have been striving for a sustainable transformation of the company for a long time, and based on this, we have already implemented several measures:

We would like to thank all the participants of the presentation of the new Doppstadt Methor shredder.

Despite the unbearable heat, the shredder uncompromisingly crushed everything that came between its teeth!

Adaptability and power are literally built into the concept of the new Doppstadt Methor shredder. This applies both to the various crushing systems and to the well-designed and extremely robust machine concept.

In small and medium-sized municipal companies, it ensures efficiency and flexibility in the processing of a wide variety of secondary and special raw materials – from construction and industrial waste to mattresses, mixed municipal waste and biomass.

At the same time, it offers all the advantages of larger primary shredders and the uncompromising quality of the Doppstadt brand.

Methor is the first Doppstadt shredder developed for small to medium quantities of material. Its shredding system can be replaced in 60 minutes.

Adding material with automatic load control – HydraulicDirect ensures optimal load curve and machine efficiency at all times.

The material feed is automatically controlled according to the load on the crushing shaft.

The pressure of the drive pump is used to control the inclination of the suction funnel. The hopper lift setting can be adjusted according to the current machine load. With this, we achieve optimal and continuous crushing without stopping.

The shredder is available on both a semi-trailer chassis with a hydraulic drive and on tracks with a remote control.

An ideal volume reduction machine and a versatile machine that can work independently or as part of a larger system.

GS Certificate

The GS mark confirms the tested safety of the product. The basis for certification is the Product Safety Act, which is used to verify all safety factors relevant to the product.

It is only granted if an independent test center has ensured that the product does not pose a risk to humans. The GS mark is awarded by an approved test center. These test centers are designated by the Central Office of State for Security Technology (ZLS). This is also monitored by the relevant GS test centers. The GS badge is awarded by independent testing bodies monitored by the Federal Office for Safety Technology. The most famous of these test centers, for example, is TÜV SÜD. The examinations themselves are divided into dimensional and visual inspection, stress tests, functional tests. All required documentation (instructions for use, risk analysis, etc.) is inspected by the controller before the tests are performed. The devices must correspond to the data written in the internal technical documentation. User manuals must be in accordance with those described in the product standard. At the same time, an inspection of the production itself was performed, which means an overview of all procedures, the documentation itself and the quality of production. Production quality inspection is performed once a year. The testing was performed at the location of the company Riko Ribnica.

The GS Certificate was awarded for the SPG and RPS family of plows.

Universal DIN 76060 mounting plate

On tractors equipped with snow plows, DIN 76060 A/5 or B/3 plate mounting systems and 3-point systems are commonly used. These mounting systems are not compatible with each other.

Example: If the tractor has A/5 mounting plate size, this system is only suitable for attachments with A/5 mounting plate size. All attachments with size B/3 without alteration or use of various adapters are useless for this tractor.

Why be limited in choosing new or used connectors to the size of the mounting plates?

In the company Riko Ribnica we offer a two-in-one mounting solution. The new universal plate on the vehicle may be suitable for mounting both types of attachments. The procedure itself requires less than a minute.

The universal mounting plate on the vehicle has cutouts for rotating bolts and additional threads for both sizes. The only change required to change the size of the plate from B/3 to A/5 is that it is necessary to screw two small plates with four M10 screws in the places where the carrying hooks fit.

The universal mounting plate on the CASE Farmall 95C tractor is height-adjustable and is made with additional lower reinforcement. The lower reinforcement distributes the forces throughout the tractor chassis generated by snow plowing, which in turn reduces the load on the front of the tractor.

A hydraulic installation (hydraulic hoses with hydraulic quick couplings, solenoid valves, etc.) has also been made to drive plows and other attachments, and control is performed via joystick.

Combined spreading and spreading of liquids in the winter service

The purpose and use of mechanization in the winter service does not change significantly, but the influence of clients and contractors on logistics, control of use and costs is still increasing.

The measures are different, but it is not only the purchase price of machinery that has an impact on costs. We all belong to the area of business success. Therefore, the assigned tasks must be successfully completed with optimal use of resources. Here, of course, questions arise as to whether tried and tested methods of winter road maintenance can be further optimized without additional investment in the organization, machines and methods of use and maintenance.

Given the nature of the work, this is of course possible, but given the unpredictability of the local condition of the road, this is very difficult. In any case, in order to improve the performance of business in the winter service, it is necessary to know the existing local situation very well and to upgrade it with different approaches and technologies.

One of the tools for spreading measures is the use of spreaders for combined spreading and spreading of liquids.

Different types of spreaders are in use. A modern spreader must enable path-dependent spreading (the amount of spreading is constant regardless of the driving speed) by compensating the spreading width and by moistening the spreading material during preventive spreading.

Disadvantages of spreading with a classic spreader:

slow spreading action (requires fluid to operate)
wind scatter sensitivity, turbulence and traffic density
lower spreading speed (35-40 km/h)
vortexing and uneven scattering of material

The difference compared to the classic and combined spreaders is in the additional liquid dosing system and in the ratio of the dry material and liquid. Dosing is done with a spreading disc and/or with a combination of nozzles and a spreading disc.

Because the combined spreader allows different ways of spreading, ie. spreading of salt, mixtures of salt and sand, spreading of salt with prewetting, spreading of the liquid itself and spreading of combinations, the user is allowed to use in all weather conditions. However, when spreading the liquid itself, its use is limited in terms of temperatures on wet roads up to temperatures down to -6 °C and on dry roads down to -8 °C.

Spreading is done by dosing on nozzles of different shapes. (mainly differences in nozzle capacity and output beam shape).

Advantages of spreading with a combined spreader:

faster operation
better spreading image, less wind dependence
reduction of salt consumption larger residual material on the road (fewer added spreading actions)
reducing the impact on the environment (use smaller amounts of dry materials)
higher spreading speed (approx. 40-50 km / h), even higher speed at 100% spreading of liquids (50-90 km/h)

By spreading 100% liquid, we create a film directly on the base. It is especially useful for preventive spreading in heavy traffic, reducing the amount of material used, lower impact on the environment, time advantage when used in winter service and thus greater traffic safety.

According to Strassen NRW Germany, the investment in a combined spreader and technology for mixing and storing solutions is depreciated in approx. 6 years.

Semi-truck for winter service

We present to you the transformation of a truck, initially designed solely for trailer towing, into a vehicle for winter service operations. By implementing innovative solutions, we have enabled easy installation and removal of the Epoke Sirius spreader and ensured efficient snow removal with the RPS 34 snow plough.

We equipped the truck with a DHS (dual-circuit hydraulic system) and a control unit, enabling simple and efficient operation of the spreader and snow plough.

One of the key advantages is the truck’s adaptability, as all components can be quickly and easily attached to the chassis with additional brackets. This allows the vehicle to transform from a trailer tow truck into a powerful tool for combating winter conditions in an instant.

The RPS snow plough represents the largest version of a snow plough in our program, designed for the most demanding road conditions. This exceptionally robust plough is ready to face the challenges posed by snow removal on regional roads as well as highways. Its strong and durable design allows for efficient and quick snow removal, ensuring improved road mobility in all conditions.

By adopting the electronic way of doing business and acquiring new competencies, we have facilitated our entry into global value chains and new markets, thus increasing the international competitiveness of our company. CALL FOR PROPOSALS FOR ESTABLISHING OR UPGRADING E-COMMERCE IN SME IN THE PERIOD 2019-2022 “E-BUSINESS 2019-2022”: DIGITIZATION OF THE COMPANY.

The company Riko Ribnica d.o.o. has successfully obtained co-financing funds for the project “Digitization of the company” in the public tender for “Public Call for the Establishment or Upgrading of Electronic Commerce in SMEs in the Period 2019-2022” E-BUSINESS 2019-2022.

The objective of the invitation to tender from the perspective of the Operational Program for the Implementation of the European Cohesion Policy is to improve the opportunities for SMEs to enter or expand their business to foreign markets by establishing or upgrading e-commerce and thus increasing their international competitiveness.

The operation covers the following measures:

Electronic exchange between partners
Digitization of appearances at fairs
Websites for foreign markets
Product – sales video
Strengthening Competences – Training

The purpose of the Call for Proposals is to co-finance eligible costs of setting up or upgrading e-commerce to support SMEs that can easily enter global value chains and new markets by adopting e-commerce, enhance the international competitiveness of their business, improve and accelerate interaction with business partners abroad, send and collect information more efficiently and improve relationships throughout the supply chain.

We received co-financing in the amount of EUR 30.000.00 for the operation.

The company Riko Ribnica d.o.o. has successfully obtained co-financing for the project “STRENGTHENING TRADEMARK MARKETING IN FOREIGN MARKETS THROUGH SHOWROOMS” in the public tender Strengthening the marketing of brands in foreign markets through showrooms abroad.

The aim of the public tender from the perspective of the Operational Program for the Implementation of European Cohesion Policy in the period 2014-2020 (hereinafter: the Operational Program) is to contribute to the specific objective “Increasing the international competitiveness of SMEs” under the priority investment “Development and implementation of new business models for SMEs in relation to internationalization “.

The purpose of the public tender is to support companies that want to strengthen the marketing of brands in foreign markets and thus achieve higher added value and competitive advantage in the market, both in positioning end products in foreign markets and in integrating into global value chains at various levels. The public tender aims to increase the cost competitiveness of the Slovenian economy and reduce possible price pressures on Slovenian suppliers of intermediate products in global value chains.

Tractor for winter service

Winter conditions are often challenging for road and surface maintenance, making the selection of the right winter service equipment crucial. In this post, we will present an excellent combination for efficient snow removal.

The New Holland T5 115 tractor is equipped with a mounting plate and rear linkage, allowing for easy installation of the snow plough. The electric control ensures smooth handling of the snow plough during work.

The SPG 291 snow plough is designed to facilitate work and ensure efficiency. It is equipped with support wheels, providing stability and better manoeuvrability. The profile signalling with flags increases the tractor’s visibility during work, while the adjustable snow curtain prevents snow from spraying onto unwanted surfaces.

For spreading purposes during winter service, the tractor is equipped with the TP 9 SNK spreader. This powerful spreader offers various spreading methods, ranging from rotary and plate spreading with a range of 2-6 metres, to traditional gravity spreading at the desired width. Different materials, such as salt, sand, or a 4-8 mm mixture, can be used for spreading.

The spreader’s control is simple and efficient with the iCom control panel. It enables various functions, such as starting and stopping the spreading, adjusting the quantity and width of spreading, and turning the working and rotating lights on and off. It also allows for symmetrical left and right spreading. If the spreader is equipped with a moistening option, liquid can be dosed during spreading.

The said spreader is connected to the tractor’s speed signal, enabling speed-dependent spreading. This means that the spreading quantity is independent of the tractor’s speed, contributing to an even and efficient distribution of the spreading material.

To ensure safety and smooth traffic flow in winter conditions, this combination of a tractor and snow plough with an excellent spreader is an ideal choice for efficient winter service. Regardless of the severity of weather conditions, this equipment will handle challenges and ensure passable roads and surfaces that are safe for all traffic participants.
